A nail pop can look like one of the smallest problems on a roof. Sometimes it appears as a raised spot beneath a shingle. Other times, you may notice an exposed nail head, a lifted shingle tab, or a rusty mark that was not there before.

Small does not always mean harmless.

During a roof repair in Landisville, Pennsylvania, our repair technician Tyler found several nail pops along the same section of an asphalt shingle roof. Some of the fasteners were already rusting. One nail was positioned too close to a shingle seam, and another problem area was near a roof valley, where rainwater is naturally concentrated.

The roof was not collapsing, and one nail pop did not automatically mean the homeowner needed a new roof. But the pattern was worth addressing before a small opening had more time to become a larger water problem.

What Is a Roof Nail Pop?

A roof nail pop happens when a roofing nail backs out of the roof deck, no longer holding the shingle securely against the roof.

The movement usually pushes up on the shingle, break its seal, and leaves the nail exposed to water.

Not every nail pop is actively leaking when it is discovered. However, a raised or exposed fastener can create a path through the roof system that water may eventually follow.

What Tyler Found on This Landisville Roof

The first clue was that this was not an isolated fastener. Tyler identified three problem nails along one line of shingles. As he opened the affected area, he also noticed that some of the nails were already rusted.

That matters because rust indicates that moisture has been reaching the metal. It does not tell us by itself how much water entered the roof system, but it is a good reason to inspect the surrounding shingles and decking instead of treating the issue like a cosmetic bump.

Tyler later found another nail pop closer to the roof valley. As he explained in the video:

“Water’s going to travel down. It follows the path of least resistance here. And this is right in the valley.”



A valley collects runoff from two roof slopes and directs it toward the gutter. Any questionable fastener placement near that flow deserves extra attention because the area handles more water than a typical open section of roof.

Poor Attic Ventilation

You wouldn't think of this as a cause for nail pops. But this is actually one of the most common sources of nail pops on shingle roofs. Excessive heat or moisture in an attic due to poor ventilation causes the roof deck to expand and contract, and shift. This in turn causes fasteners to lose their grip in the roof deck and back out of it.

Incorrect Nail Placement

A fastener outside the designated nailing area may not hold the correct layers of the shingle. It may also sit too close to an edge or seam.

Incorrect Nail Depth or Angle

An underdriven nail can keep a shingle from sitting flat. A nail driven at an angle may not seat properly and can damage the shingle beneath it. If the nail is protruding (not set flat against the shingle it's driven into), heat and weather will eventually cause it to poke through the shingle covering it.

Insufficient Grip in the Roof Deck

A nail that misses solid decking, lands in a gap, or does not penetrate far enough will likely back out over time.

Fastener Corrosion

An exposed or inappropriate fastener can rust, weakening it and signaling that moisture has reached the area.

In this Landisville repair, the poor placement near the seam was visible. The pattern of several affected nails also suggested that Tyler needed to inspect more than one shingle.

We cannot determine every condition present during the original installation from the finished roof alone, so it would be irresponsible to claim one cause explains every fastener he found.

Why Hammering the Nail Back Down Is Not a Complete Repair

It is tempting to look at a raised nail and think, “Just hit it with a hammer.”

That may flatten the bump for the moment, but it does not necessarily correct the original placement, restore the shingle seal, or address the opening around the fastener.

For this repair, Tyler carefully separated the shingle at its seal, sometimes called the tar line, so he could reach the hidden nail line without tearing the surrounding material.

He then loosened and removed the affected fasteners while taking care not to puncture the shingle below.

The goal of a professional repair is to address the entire vulnerable area. Depending on the roof and the condition of the shingles, that may include:

• Removing the loose or incorrectly positioned fastener
• Checking the surrounding shingles for punctures, cracks, or broken seals
• Refitting or replacing the affected shingle when needed
• Installing the replacement fastener in the correct location
• Resealing lifted shingles as required
• Inspecting nearby seams, nail lines, and water-carrying areas for related problems

This is not a recommended do-it-yourself project. Aside from the repair details, working on a sloped roof creates a serious fall risk.

A repair that looks simple from the ground can also become more expensive if a tool punctures the shingle below, which Tyler specifically warns about in the video.

Can One Nail Pop Cause a Roof Leak?

It can, but the honest answer is that not every nail pop has already produced an interior leak.

The risk is higher when the nail is exposed or rusty, the shingle is lifted or damaged, the fastener sits near a seam, or the problem is close to a valley or another area that carries a large amount of water.

Multiple nail pops in the same section also suggest that the surrounding shingles should be inspected instead of repairing only the most obvious bump.



Water entering around a fastener may travel along the roof deck or framing before it appears inside. That means the ceiling stain in a bedroom is not always directly beneath the opening on the roof.

There is another detail homeowners often notice in roof repair photos: the replacement shingles may not perfectly match the surrounding roof.

Existing shingles change as they are exposed to sunlight, heat, rain, and organic growth. A new shingle can appear darker, lighter, or slightly different in tone next to material that has weathered for years.

The original shingle product or color may also have been discontinued.

A visible color difference does not automatically mean the repair was performed incorrectly. Compatibility, correct fastening, and a watertight result are the functional priorities.



Appearance should still be discussed before the work whenever an exact match is not available, so the homeowner knows what to expect.
