Do Your Gutters Need Work?

The kind of heavy rain we’ve been getting lately reveals a lot. It washes away dirt and reveals what color your car has been this whole time. It reveals leaks in your roof and windows. And often, it reveals that your gutters don’t work very well.

Your gutters may not be broken or sagging, so it’s easy to assume they’re working fine. But if heavy rainfall causes water to overflow the gutter, something is wrong. Most likely, the gutter is clogged and a simple cleaning will fix your problem.

If the gutter is leaking, not overflowing, that probably means water is coming through a seam in the gutter, or the gutter is damaged.

What To Do About Clogged Gutters

If you decide to clean your gutters yourself, make sure to use proper safety gear and follow the instructions on your ladder and other equipment. Most often, a clog occurs right above the downspout, at the end of the gutter.

If you’re hiring a professional, make sure to choose one who will inspect your gutter while cleaning, to make sure you don’t have any other problems.

What To Do About Leaking Gutters

If your gutter is leaking at an elbow or other seam, that should be easily solved with caulking or other minor repairs.

If the gutter actually has holes in it, chances are you’ll need to get it replaced. For most homes, we recommend seamless K-gutters.
